Common Types of Hip Pain

The following list may help for the diagnosis of common symptoms of hip pain:

  • Stress Fracture: hairline breaks in abnormal bone under normal force, or hairline breaks in normal bone under excessive force (strenuous and repetitive activity)
  • Iliopsoas Tendonitis: inflammation of the iliopsoas muscle and can also affect the bursa located underneath the tendon of the iliopsoas muscle, typically caused by repetitive hip flexion or overuse of the hip area
  • Iliopsoas Syndrome: a stretch, tear or complete rupture of the iliopsoas muscle and/or tendon, caused by a sudden contraction of the iliopsoas muscle, which results in a rupture or tear of the muscle
  • Femoroacetabular impingement: a condition where the ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum) rub abnormally creating damage to the hip joint
  • Bursitus: inflammation of one or more bursae (small sacs) of synovial fluid in the body
  • Piriformis Syndrome: a condition where the sciatic nerve is compressed by the piriformis muscle (located in the gluteal region) causing pain, tingling and numbness in the buttocks and along the path of the sciatic nerve shooting down the back or side of the leg

  • Pavanamuktasana/Apanasana
  • Sphinx pose
  • Roll on tennis ball
